Everyone! C’è un nuovo nome da tenere d’occhio nella scena R&B. Si chiama Riaan, ed è un giovane (è del 2003!) talento che sta facendo parlare di sé, e con ottime ragioni. Qualche mese fa ha fatto il suo debutto con Treat Me Better, un pezzo in inglese che ha attirato l’attenzione di molti. Da una manciata di giorni invece è uscita la sua splendida Adore You.
Riaan non rappresenta il classico prodotto dell’industria k-pop. Sì, è stato trainee alla SM Entertainment – che l’ha intercettato giovanissimo quando, in California dove viveva, pubblicava cover su IG – ma ha anche studiato Vocal Performance al Seoul Institute of the Arts. E questo la dovrebbe dire lunga sulle sue abilità vocali e performative. Inoltre il suo singolo di debutto Treat Me Better (luglio 2024) si discosta decisamente dal tipico sound k-pop. Invece di un brano dance pop accattivante in coreano, ha scelto un pezzo R&B completamente in inglese, in collaborazione con artisti internazionali quali il cantante singaporiano Gen Neo (consigliatissimo!!!), sua Maestà Jackson Wang e Flip_00, che ha prodotto la traccia. Questo approccio è più simile a quello di artisti R&B indipendenti coreani come Dean o Crush, che hanno puntato dritto ad un pubblico globale fin dall’inizio.
Il suo singolo di debutto è una miscela di R&B soul e testi introspettivi in inglese, pensati per un pubblico globale. La traccia deve molto a Gen Neo, non solo un co-autore: il suo imprinting si sente nell’approccio ibrido tra pop e R&B, tipico del suo stile; l’artista di Singapore porta in dote due elementi cruciali:
- testi diretti che giocano su dualismi emotivi (“Don’t wanna be your friend, wanna be your lover“), suo marchio di fabbrica (cito ad esempio OTNW o Relapse 45).
- produzione pulita, che lascia spazio alle sfumature vocali, evitando sovrastrutture elettroniche – una scelta che allinea Riaan alla scena R&B contemporanea più “essenziale”.
Il risultato è un sound che mescola tradizione coreana, con un equilibrio cristallino tra melodia accattivante e profondità lirica, e ambizioni globali. Non a caso, Riaan cita Justin Bieber e Dean come riferimenti musicali, due artisti che hanno costruito carriere oltre i confini linguistici.
Il 31 gennaio scorso è uscita Adore You, che conferma l’evoluzione di Riaan verso un R&B ibrido che fonde romanticismo e arrangiamenti raffinati. Prodotto da BOYTOY, noto per collaborazioni con Jackson Wang e (G)I-DLE, il brano mantiene la collaborazione con Gen Neo – autore dei testi insieme a Riaan – che infonde il suo consueto dualismo emotivo, tra desiderio e vulnerabilità (“I still dream about you”). La base strumentale, costruita su arpeggi di chitarra e synth minimalisti, esalta la voce evanescente di Riaan, mentre il MV – con riferimenti visivi alla crescita personale – allinea l’artista alla poetica di Dean.
Ma attenzione, perché il giovine meraviglioso non è solo un cantante: suona anche pianoforte e chitarra, talenti che usa per creare versioni alternative dei suoi brani durante le performance live. Guardando al futuro, sono molto curiosa di come questa giovanissima gemma potrà sfruttare le sue abilità multi-strumentali nelle prossime produzioni in studio.
L’evoluzione della sua collaborazione con Gen Neo, che sembra consolidarsi sempre di più, potrebbe portare a sperimentazioni più audaci, magari esplorando territori come il pop elettronico o le sonorità lo-fi, molto amate da chi scrive. Adore You was released on January 31st, confirming Riaan’s evolution toward a hybrid R&B that blends romance and refined arrangements. Produced by BOYTOY, known for collaborations with Jackson Wang and (G)I-DLE, the track maintains a collaboration with Gen Neo – author of the lyrics along with Riaan – who infuses his usual emotional duality, between longing and vulnerability (“I still dream about you”). The instrumental base, built on minimalist guitar arpeggios and synths, enhances Riaan’s evanescent voice, while the MV – with visual references to personal growth – aligns the artist with Dean’s poetics.
