For me, it all started with Morse Code. An intermittent signal, a code to be deciphered that turned out to be the discovery of one of the most promising rock bands on the current Korean scene: Dragon Pony.

Dragon Pony wasn’t born by chance. They are part of Antenna, a label founded by musicians for musicians—a significant detail that is reflected in every note they play. The band’s name is a demographic and symbolic crossroads: the four members were born between the year of the Dragon and the year of the Horse, uniting two powerful forces of the Chinese zodiac. And their music has plenty of power to spare.

But who are Dragon Pony? They are Ahn Tae-gyu (vocals and guitar), Pyun Sung-hyun (bass), Kwon Se-hyuk (guitar), and Ko Gang-hun (drums). Four very young men who, since their official debut in September 2024 with the EP “Pop Up,” made one thing clear right away: they write their own material. Lyrics, music, arrangements. This total immersion in the creative process gives their music a palpable authenticity, an urgency that smells of the rehearsal room, of sleepless nights spent searching for the right chord, the perfect word.

Theirs is a rock style that sinks its roots in tradition but looks straight to the present, described by some as “youthwave.” It speaks of dreams, anxieties, and the fierce determination of those just over twenty with a future to write. It’s no coincidence that their second EP is titled Not Out, a battle cry that sounds like, “we’re just getting started, and we have no intention of giving up.” Their lyrics narrate the struggle of growing up, the feeling of being misunderstood, but also the hope and passion that burn under the skin.

It is precisely within this universe of meaning that my first discovery fits: the aforementioned Morse Code. A song that, as the title suggests, speaks of hidden signals, of a secret language that only those on the same wavelength can understand. It’s an invitation to find your own kind, to create a code to feel less alone.

Dragon Pony is a signal that cuts through the background noise. They are proof that rock, in its thousand forms, still has much to say, especially when played by young guys who are hungry for the stage and have stories to shout to the world.

Since that first listen, Dragon Pony’s trajectory has been unstoppable. Sold-out concerts, appearances at major festivals, and growing international word-of-mouth. Their strength lies in transforming their experiences as trainees, as young people stepping into life, into a sound that is both powerful and vulnerable.

And today, Radio Silence (or Earth Boy) arrives. The titles play on a fascinating duality: the “Earth Boy,” with his feet planted in his earthly uncertainties, and the “radio silence,” the absence of a signal, the difficulty of communicating. It’s a track the band had already performed live, now arriving in its official version in response to insistent fan requests—a testament to the already powerful bond they share with their audience.
