The world has come to know South Korea through K-Beauty, a cosmetic empire founded on centuries-old traditions and advanced scientific research. Skincare rituals have long been a pillar of the national culture, rooted in a meticulous and shared expertise that emphasizes harmony and bodily care.
In sharp contrast to this centrality, the use of perfume in Korea remained for generations a discreet gesture, almost an excess. In a society where collective harmony prevailed over individual affirmation, distinguishing oneself with a strong sillage went against the implicit code of not invading the intimate sphere of others. The unwritten rule was absolute discretion.
Today, however, South Korea is charting a new course for its olfactory history. Following the pandemic, a new generation expressed the need to assert its individuality. This profound cultural shift has transformed fragrance from a potential intrusion into an extension of the self and an instrument of intimate expression. K-Perfume, as this phenomenon is called, is positioned at the intersection of a rich cosmetic heritage and a decisive push towards innovation. It is the beginning of a new era.
The dynamism of K-Perfume has already found its first welcome in Italy, particularly at Pitti Fragranze in Florence (we told you about it here). However, the official start of its expansion into Europe is taking shape with KOREA PERFUME PARIS, the first collective established with the goal of showcasing emerging talents in Korean perfumery.
The initiative, which clearly signals a cultural shift in progress, was born from the meeting of two key figures: Sarah Kyu-Young Pae, a perfume tailor and representative of GIP international cooperation in Asia-Pacific (Scent by Co.), and Roméo Oh, founder and artistic director of OHTOP, a Franco-Korean perfume house. Roméo and Sarah explored the Korean olfactory scene to select eleven independent houses, each carrying a unique vision ranging from revisited tradition to experimental audacity. The collective’s first international event concludes today, September 26, 2025, in Paris, at the heart of the world’s perfume capital. The event clearly serves as a launchpad for future events, with the objective of expanding to other European capitals starting in 2026.
Among the eleven independent houses that make up the KOREA PERFUME PARIS collective, offering a snapshot of the plurality and experience of K-Perfume, we find:
- Barrio (@barrioperfumes), which celebrates multiculturalism and offers perfumes in nomadic formats for a free and playful olfactory wardrobe.
- Bienbiang (@bienbiang.official), which merges Korean identity with cultural influences, featuring fragrances inspired by the tropical island of Hainan and Parisian refinement.
- Blndrgrphy (@blndrgrphy), which blends perfumery with mixology and visual storytelling, transforming iconic cocktails into immersive olfactory creations.
- Enrobage (@enrobage_official), which invites discovering one’s “inner color” by associating each fragrance with a specific chromatic personality, uniting French tradition and poetic modernity.
- Mimicri (@wearemimicri), whose concept is “para-art,” narrating through perfume the atmosphere and tension that precede the birth of an artwork.
- Le Persona (@lepersona_official), the niche house that translates the complexity of the individual into olfactory narratives, using perfume as an invisible mask that reveals the self.
- Odt. Parfums (@odt_parfums), whose name derives from oddity, defending a free and inclusive vision of perfume as a manifesto for the courage to be oneself.
- Ohtop (@ohtopofficial), founded by creator Roméo Oh, who views fragrance as an “invisible garment,” intimately connecting fashion and perfume.
- Organ Tale (@organtale), born from the founder shim ilhwa’s childhood memory, conceiving each creation as a sensitive work, an emotion to be shared.
- Pesade (@pesade_official), inspired by the equestrian dressage movement of the same name (which embodies harmony between strength and balance), where each perfume is built in olfactory triads for a perfect balance.
- SW19 Fragrance (@sw19_official), which draws inspiration from the aesthetics of time, celebrating the sophisticated simplicity of everyday moments, with collections that unfold across the day.
Korean perfumery is carving a compelling path: discreet today, unmissable tomorrow. Its ascent in Europe is not just a fleeting trend, but confirmation that Korean creativity, innovation, and talent are ready to leave an unmistakable sillage in the heart of the Western market as well.
